Who We Are

We Are The Quest

Welcome to The Quest. We are a progressive Christian faith community based in Novato, California, just north of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. We love Marin County, and most of us live here, but the pandemic has taught us that we no longer have to be limited by geography. We are led by the co-pastor team of Tony Gapastione and Matt Nightingale, who live in Redwood City and Santa Rosa, respectively. And most Sundays we are joined by people tuning in from all over the world: Betty from Colorado, Gaines from Pennsylvania, Alejandro from Puerto Vallarta, Meredith from Alaska, Chloe from Oklahoma and so many more.

The Quest owns a building in Novato. We love to gather together, and we do it as often as we can. But we cannot deny the movement of the Spirit. We are no longer just QuestNovato, because no matter where we are, WeAreTheQuest.

Our mission is to explore God together, and our vision is to create a loving, safe and inclusive community for all people (all races, nationalities, orientations, socio-economic backgrounds, ages, abilities, genders and perspectives) to find and follow Jesus. We believe that it’s more important for our faith to express itself in love than in correct doctrine. Galatians 5:6 makes this abundantly clear: “For in Christ Jesus… the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”

We are attempting to follow the love, the ways and the person of Jesus as best we can; seeking to understand, question and respond to God through scripture, story and everyday life; all while acknowledging that life is complex and that God is still a mystery. We do the best we can, but we admit that we are still learning and growing all the time. We might be wrong, and as we learn new things, we’re not afraid to admit that we’ve changed our minds.

• The Quest is a fun loving Christian community that celebrates individuality and diversity of all kinds.
• We get that some people may be “triggered” by past church experiences, so we approach the Bible with open hearts and minds, and encourage personal responses to scripture.
• We also see the Divine all around us and seek out its inspiration in art, music, film and nature.
• Most of all, we try to create a safe space where we can explore God together and benefit our community
